Escalation and de-escalation of commitment to information systems projects: Insights from a project evaluation model
نویسندگان
چکیده
This paper outlines a project evaluation model for examining escalation and de-escalation of commitment to information systems projects. We view escalation and de-escalation of commitment as processes involving recurring instances of approach-avoidance conflict. In the model, the sequential mapping of project events is integrated with a model of approach-avoidance conflict that identifies periods of gradual evolution at two separate levels of social analysis (project and work) that are punctuated by sudden, revolutionary periods of rapid change. By conceiving the processes of commitment escalation and de-escalation as sequences of events involving approach-avoidance conflicts, researchers may develop a deeper understanding of how and why projects escalate and de-escalate. Practitioners can also utilize the evaluation model in the analyses of projects that have faced escalation to diagnose the issues surrounding the escalation and devise useful de-escalation strategies for future project development. The evaluation model is developed and illustrated with a case study that exhibits both project escalation and de-escalation conditions. 2005 Published by Elsevier B.V.

متن کاملEscalation and premature termination in MIS projects: the role of real options
Purpose of the paper This paper examines how the real option theory is applicable to evaluation of cases of escalation and premature termination of Management Information Systems (MIS) projects. Design/methodology/approach We compare the implications of psychological and economic escalation theories with lessons from the real option theory as applied to MIS projects. Then, we examine published ...
متن کاملEscalation and de-escalation of commitment: a commitment transformation analysis of an e-government project
This paper presents a commitment transformation framework for analysing the change in actors’ commitment during the transition from escalation to deescalation in information technology projects. De-escalation is potentially a more important issue than escalation because de-escalation provides remedies for the ills of escalation. Therefore, it is important to understand how stakeholders may bias...
متن کاملEscalation in IT Projects: Can We Afford to Quit or do We Have to Continue?
Many information technology (IT) projects fail. These projects are not within budget, not on time or do not deliver what was promised. Failures in IT projects are more common than failures in any other aspect of modern business. Whereas a large number of projects are obvious failures, some are not. A model of escalation—increasing commitment to a failing course of action—is used to analyze and ...
متن کاملUnfreezing-changing-refreezing of actors' commitment: the transition from escalation to de-escalation of commitment to information technology projects
Escalation is a common and costly problem among IT projects. Although the potential of de-escalation of commitment to failing courses of action has been much heralded, many such efforts may result in failure due to constituencies biasing facts in the direction of previously accepted beliefs, and therefore, prevent an organization from de-escalating. Here, we adopt Lewin’s change framework to ex...
